You should leave the trunk suckers. My trunk when from a pencil to a dang near pyramid shsped thick boi in like 6 months
Is trimming them basically like trimming a juniper? Like you have to cut back to buds or is it like podocarpus in that ypu can trim nearly anything
Where'd ya go Sami? I was curious to see how after 5 years back budding worked out for you. Great initial prune on this boxwood! 👍
Beautiful
When is the best time to do this, season wise?
Thanks
Hello there! I am relatively new to ‘true’ bonsai. I enjoy watching other people and their pruning decisions! One thing I wanted to tell you is, that tree looks to be a thuja Occidentals (arborvitae/northern white cedar) 👌🌲💚
Could not see aything in the last half of the video because of camera.
Mantab bos
Great video my friend 🙏🏼🙏🏼💚🌲🌲
You almost broke off the cascading branch when you kept spinning the turntable and the branch was bent back by the other containers Clear off the worktable.
Slow but sure, the pruning done will be the start of a nice tree.
The birds are singing for your video. Cool!
Playing catch up. Missed this great video.
That larch is looking good!! Really could be a nice shohin size already. Just need to work on branch selection and ramifications of those branches.
Thanks
Personally I like the fact that giant sequoia trees have branches all the way to the bottom. So perfect for a bonsai tree. I have recently planted some tiny giant sequioa seedlings in Sweden. I will be making update videos.
Like the intro graphics...very creative...thank you for sharing!
Big chop!
lots of potential there. nice work
Thanks for watching
Really liked the video! Thanks. Did you do a follow up with this tree and did you get leaf size reduction with the second flush of growth?
No this tree didn't get a follow up yet, I was going to repot it this spring, but being in the hospital and recovering messed that up. They did come in a little small with the second flush. I think I biggest problem with it is that it need the leaves thinned as the grow in clumps and it is dense. Thanks for watching
Timing is everything! I was just about to tackle a pruning job on my two weeping willows. The guidance is much appreciated.
Thanks for watching and glad you found the video useful.
You really have a nice forest setting of last years potting. Pot looks cool. Nice trunk development on the forest, 8 minutes in.
Thanks
Second pot. Weeding is always a chore. Necessary though for the maintenance of your forest. Looks really cool.
Nice small pot with the larch. Looks good.
Nice work on the larch Sami! 👍
Thanks
Hi Sami, thanks for sharing. Your videos are great! Couple questions here as a friend and I recently both harvested about 5 or 6 larches each with the intention of group planting them - 1. you trim back the branches pretty tightly to the trunk, maybe I missed it but will they grow back pretty extensively on this species? 2. Have you ever repotted a group/forest planting? What is that like? Thank you for your time!
Yes the larch will grow back quickly. Some growing season you can get three or four flushes of growth. Also this was the first time I pruned them, so some of the branches just needed to be cut back to help with movement. Being a tight forest as I going for the lower branches won't be as long as they would in forest with farther spaced trees or a single tree. Each tree will need it's own space, with a tight conical shape. Well this was repotted last spring, after a year in a pot, and the roots were starting to grow together. Most stayed together as a group and I had to pull out any I wanted to move. The long a group grows together the more they will grow together and come out as one root base.
@@SamisBonsai Thank you! That's very helpful, I'm looking forward to trying a smaller forest of my own!
I love that pot
Glad you like it. Thanks for watching
I have a very similar looking group I planted about 3 yrs ago. I will be using your tips to trim my trees back. Nice work Sami.
Thanks, I'm glad I could be helpful.
Finished pruning looks good and will make a great looking forest for you. Very nice little trunks on them.
Thanks
That is one cool looking larch forest.
FOIST
Nice work Sami, a very nice Brazilian Raintree!
Thanks, I picked this one out because of the twist in the trunk.
I don‘t know if anyone can answer this, but my Giant sequoia (3-4 Years) is having brown tips. Some are from cutting it back, but it had some already when it arrived. It looks healthy otherwise. But the top is becoming yellowish (it‘s still growing) the new shoots also keep getting bigger almost every day. Has anyone got the same problem with some needles and some tips of the branches getting brown? I hope someone might have an idea
The parts that did not get much sun often die off. Make sure to never let sequoia dry out. Also give it some fertilizer. They "eat" a lot :-)
@@howtogrowdragonfruitplant7849 sadly over the course of the last two weeks.. it died. Slowly but unstoppable. It started getting brown everywhere. At first only the small branches. Bit after almost all had gone crisp the still very firm and green tip of the tree went limp and died off soon after ( i didn‘t over or under water it, had enough fertilizer, no root rot). It might have been to hot on my balcony in the city (as all my plants died away). I am deeply saddened by this. I plan on restarting my Redwood Bonsai projects next year
A grafted elm that you did is really a nice looking tree with a nice trunk on it. Pruning was nicely done. Great video.
I bought this one because like the trunk. I see a lot of curvy trunked tree to not be as smooth of curve as this one.
The Serissa is looking good! And the others too!!
Thanks
Cascading elm. Cool!
Great little Serissa. Hope you are feeling better though.
Yes I'm feeling better, just have to build back my stamina. The two I work on tree yesterday wore me out with move my equipment and tree, and standing. I get back to normal with time.
@@SamisBonsai Just take your time healing. Slow but sure.
Foist!
Nice Tom!!
Hello Sami ! Nice update, great to see some familiar trees from over the years doing well. Glad your feeling better.
Thanks
Thanks for the updates Sami!!
Thanks
Some cool trees there!
Thanks
Sorry to hear you have been ill. Look after yourself. Trees looking good.
Thanks, I'm no longer ill, but I have had to recover my strength from two weeks bed bound.
do you place the tree in direct sunlight after repotting? or does it need to be in shade?
A tree needs some time in the shade to recover, 2-3 weeks. But Boxwoods want partial shade and not full sun normally.
Bonsai form Sami's awesome and 👍
Thanks for watch
I like the pot you choose for the cascading Sky Flower. Repotting showed a lot of nice roots.
I picked the pot for the blue color because I had it in a blue plastic pot the first few years and loved it with the blue.
Having a hot cup of tea while enjoying a great video!
You should get some great looking flowers off of this fascinating little tree.
I had a few flowers one summer, but I think I have to just let in grow from spring to having flowers to get a lot. This video is from a Dec. as I did several then and don't have a lot to do in the winter for videos so I space them out, so they are ready for another prune to get them ready for spring.
To be honest, I had to lookup Skyflower. Very interesting! Glad to see the serissa recovering, and the hibiscus survived.
Thanks for watching Jay
Nice work Sami, I enjoyed the updates too!
Thanks for watch Nigel.
I like your videos because you work on younger trees. For beginners like me, it's valuable to see how to develop & care for trees at this stage. While it's impressive (and I enjoy) watching work being done on thick and mature specimens, it doesn't help me learn how to get there. Thank you for taking the time to show the process of starting small instead of chopping up a large pre-bonsai from a nursery. I have several young port cuttings I'm growing "wild" to thicken the trunks and several Japanese Maples seedlings (from my dad's yard) wintering in my outdoor storage closet. Keep the videos coming!
Thsnks. I only been back into Bonsai for the last five years so many of my trees are young and at early stages and I try to video most of the things I do.
